TOP FOODS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL HUNGER
LIST OF TOP FOODS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL HUNGER
Do you ever have those days when your stomach feels like a bottomless pit? The next meal feels like an eternity away and you’ve got a serious case of the “Hangries”.
It’s natural for our appetite to fluctuate a little, depending on exercise, stress and hormones. But some foods will artificially amplify your appetite, driving you to distraction and blowing a balanced day of eating out the window!
Find out what 6 foods will rev up those hunger pangs, and some handy alternatives to eat instead!
1. White Toast
It’s fluffy. It’s slightly sweet and it’s oh-so-delicious. Yet this common breakfast choice has some deceptive qualities that are fully programmed to bring on an appetite attack!
Like any refined carbohydrate, white bread is made from a flour that is devoid of its bran and fiber content. This means that our body can digest the leftover starch very quickly, and convert it into sugar.
The result? Blood sugar levels spike and we get a massive dump of insulin into the bloodstream. Then blood sugar levels plummet and we’re left wondering why we feel like devouring the kitchen.
Throw in some butter (which sends happy, opiate-like signals to the brain) plus a sweet spread, and you don’t have a recipe for breakfast… You have a recipe for hunger!
Choose Instead: Toasted multigrain spelt, sourdough, gluten-free or sprouted essene bread. Choose a spread that is low in sugar, such a nut butter, pure peanut butter, tahini, avocado or chia jam.
2. Fries
In terms of top foods that are hardwired to make us eat more, and MORE, then still want more later - fries are certainly up there!
The hunger-driving effects of fries are twofold. Firstly, fries are totally oozing with fat and smothered in salt; two components that light up our brains with pleasure signals and stimulate our appetite.
Fries are also undeniably delicious. This is also an important factor to consider when it comes to hunger, as humans don’t just eat for physiological reasons. We eat because it tastes good too!
Choose Instead: A whole-baked jacket potato, sweet potato fries, homemade zucchini chips or even a healthified potato salad.
3: Beer, wine and spirits… Or anything alcoholic!
We’re often told that the occasional glass of red is good for your health. Rich in heart-healthy antioxidants and polyphenols, there’s a good argument in favor of enjoying red wine in moderation.
On the flip side, alcohol - of any kind - is a known appetite stimulant and will make most people eat more. Plus, it relaxes you and lower your inhibitions around food - which is probably not so good if you have heart disease.
Choose Instead: If you’re going to drink, choose red wine for its antioxidant quality. Stick to one standard glass and drink it slowly throughout your meal. Always aim to have several nights a weeks which are alcohol free.
4: Chinese Fast Food (MSG)
On paper, it would appear that Chinese food has many of the qualities which would usually help us feel full. Many dishes are high in protein, provide a half-decent serve of veggies (depending on where you go) and generally contains rice, which tends to be bulking in the stomach.
Yet inside that delicious plate of sweet and salty deliciousness lurks a very clever little additive which has been engineered with one agenda in mind - to make us eat more.
MSG, monosodium glutamate and E621 all refer to an artificial flavor enhancer that is commonly used in Chinese cuisine. Research shows that regular intake of MSG may override the satiety centres of the brain and therefore contribute to obesity.
Choose Instead: Chinese restaurants that explicitly don’t use MSG or make your own delicious Chinese dishes at home!
5: Sugary Cereals
Kids’ sugary breakfast cereals may be tastebud-pleasers, yet they are laced with all sorts of hidden nasties that aren’t too pleasing in other ways.
For starters, did you know that the average kids’ cereal is loaded with almost twice the amount of sugar than adult versions? Hello blood sugar mayem!
This sugar also typically comes from high fructose corn syrup, which may interfere with the body’s release of leptin, the ‘fullness hormone’. Therefore, our body doesn’t get the normal signals to stop munching.
Choose Instead: A wholesome granola, oatmeal, porridge or chia pudding. You can also check out these top tips for making a healthy breakfast.
6. The Not-So-Sweet Sweeteners
Even though the label may read ‘diet’, don’t let this clever marketing deceive you.
When our tastebuds detect the sweet flavor of artificial sweeteners, the body prepares for a rush of carbohydrate or sugar… That never comes. Effectively, these sweeteners hijack the brain’s centre that detects sweet foods, yet never follows up with the physical delivery of sweetness.
We’re left hungry, unsatisfied and yearning for a real sweet treat - something to hit the sweet spot that our brain and body expected.
Choose Instead: If you really, genuinely are craving something sweet, opt for something that is naturally sweetened (for example with honey, rice malt syrup, coconut sugar, rapadura or pure maple syrup). Many raw, nut-based vegan desserts are also a better option because they are micronutrient-dense, meaning that you still get a bunch of vitamins and minerals as you indulge.
Fan Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan is back in form
Fan Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan is back in form with his finest unconventional movie
Just when you thought Shah Rukh Khan is losing his edge, he makes a comeback. And how! Going back to his early acting days, where twisted characters gave him his big break, Bollywood’s king of romance still has what it takes to give you the creeps.
Movie : Fan
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Waluscha de Sousa, Sayani Gupta
Director: Maneesh Sharma
Rating: 3.5/5
'Fan' is a brave attempt by Maneesh Sharma. You have to watch it for stellar performance by Shah Rukh Khan.
Though one of the better Shah Rukh Khan scripts in years, Fan is not devoid of loopholes, but it still makes for a thrilling watch. With the actor playing the two main characters in the film, especially two that are at such odds with each other, it can’t be easy to keep a smooth narrative. However, Fan may just well be an inwar journey for Shah Rukh Khan where his large celebrity persona meets the humble old him that represents the thousands of his fans.
It’s not a subject that’s new or unique. Yet there is a certain charm about the way Maneesh Sharma has scripted the film – it reflects inferences drawn from Shah Rukh Khan’s career and life. The first half zips past thanks to the engrossing screenplay. The characters of both Gaurav and Aryan are well established with each one coming with his own perspective. In fact, that is Sharma’s big triumph .
He doesn’t give the viewer a chance to decide who’s right and who’s wrong. Directorially also, the first half casts its distinctive spell. Sharma has captured the first meeting between Aryan and Gaurav brilliantly – it’s a scene that will stay with you. Watch out also for the scene towards the climax when Aryan pretends to be Gaurav – it’s a masterstroke. It’s brave to attempt a film like Fan – with SRK playing the protagonist and antagonist both and break all the rules of commercial filmmaking by doing away with songs and any ‘relief’ tracks. As a film, Fanis dark, moody, disturbing and definitely unconventional. And this time, the lead actor’s contribution is just as much as the director’s. Shah Rukh Khan is at his finest – this is easily his best performance in recent years. He makes Gaurav’s obsession just as effective as Aryan’s restlessness. Most importantly, even though Aryan’s character is based on his real self, he doesn’t shy away from the cracks at his superstardom. The scene where Aryan is in front of the mirror checking out his aging skin is a bravura act – not many stars would have the courage to do that. As an actor, Fan is a definite game-changer for SRK.
WHAT’S NOT:
Fan succumbs badly to the second-half syndrome and that is its undoing. It’s almost like the first and the second half are two different films. Sharma (who has also written the film) leads towards a problem very well in the pre-intermission part. But after that, he goes awry when he illustrates it further. Even the obsession in Darr (from where Fan is inspired) seems far too real to what Sharma has conveyed. Everything in the second half is unbelievable – a middle-class Delhi boy travelling to foreign countries and getting the better of a reigning Bollywood superstar should have at least been handled better. Long, drawn-out action scenes will have you squirming in your seat. Aryan’s character suddenly becomes more of a caricature. The climax is exhausting and the film ends on a low, which is sad. You also miss the support of other fine actors after a point – Shriya Pilgaonkar, Deepika Amin, and Waluscha D’Souza really have nothing to offer.
WHAT TO DO:
Fan is a not a great film, it is a brave film. Watch it still for Shah Rukh Khan’s outstanding portrayal (an extra star only for him).

Gurgaon will now be called Gurugram
The town derived its name from Guru Dronacharya; the village was given as "gurudakshina" to him by the Pandavas, hence the name Gurugram
The Haryana Government on Tuesday decided to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram and its neighbouing district Mewat as Nuh.
Announcing the decision, an official spokesman said the decision to change the name of Gurgaon had been taken on the basis of the representations received at several forums.
He said Haryana was a historic land mentioned in the Bhagwat Gita and Gurgaon had been a great centre of learning, where Guru Dronacharya used to provide education to the Pandavas and Kauras.
The town derived its name from Guru Dronacharya; the village was given as “gurudakshina” to him by his students, the Pandavas, and hence it came to be known as Gurugram.
This name in course of time got distorted to Gurgaon. Therefore, the people of the area had been long demanding that Gurgaon be renamed as Gurugram.
The spokesperson said that Mewat, in fact is a geographical and cultural unit and not a town. It is spread beyond Haryana in the adjoining States of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The headquarters of Mewat district is at Nuh town. The people of the area and the elected representatives had been demanding the name change of Mewat to Nuh. He said Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has approved the proposal to change the names.
However, the proposal would now be forwarded to the Government of India for its approval and come into force only after a Gazette Notification.
A committee of councillors had also sent a proposal to the government in this regard.
The renaming, however, evoked mixed reactions. While Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash said it would not hamper the administrative work, some felt that it would entail unwarranted expenses and the city had already made a place for itself in the global map as Gurgaon.
Reactions
Aam Aadmi Party, Haryana spokesperson, R.S. Rathee said the government should concentrate on improving the infrastructure in the city and tackling the problems of water scarcity, unemployment and lack of connectivity instead of resorting to such cosmetic measures. “What is the government going to achieve with name change?,” he asked.
“As the state government decides to change the city’s name, they should also look ahead at changing the road mobility situation, the waste management and the situation of diminishing forest cover. What is urgently required in Gurgaon or Gurugram is to bring radical changes in the development of this city,” said Embarq India manager (cities and transport) Sarika Panda Bhatt, also the force behind the “Car Free Day”.
Welcoming the move, however, Gurgaon Mayor Vimal Yadav said that he was working along with other councillors on the idea of erecting a statue of Guru Dronacharya at an important intersection in the city. Not only this, after the approval of the State government to change the name, we are also thinking of having Guru Dronacharya’s pictures displayed at all the city entrances, said Mr. Yadav, adding that the renaming would draw the people of Gurgaon closer to its rich cultural heritage.
“It won't hamper the administrative work in any manner. We are slated to get a new stationery in the next few months so it won't make much difference to us. Also it is up to the people as to how they react to the name change,” said Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash.
Vivek Kundu, a MBA student of Gurgaon Institute of Technology and Management, said: “It is an unwarranted and unpopular move. Connaught Place was also renamed as Rajiv Chowk. But people still know the place as Connaught Place only. It is a popular name. I believe Gurgaon will also continue to be known as such as people are not going to accept the new name. It sounds old-fashioned and is such a tongue-twister.”
